About Marie Abdalla Brodie, MS

Marie Brodie, MS - has over 15 years of experience in the battered women's movement. She is the founder and president of Walk in my Shoes, a domestic violence training and consulting company located in Durham, NC. Prior to founding the company, Ms. Brodie was the training and media relations coordinator for the North Carolina Coalition Against Domestic Violence for seven years. She has extensive experience in training advocates and allied professionals on the dynamics of domestic violence, how to work with victims, and how to improve our community response to survivors and perpetrators of violence. As the media relations coordinator for NCCADV, Ms. Brodie conducted many print, radio, and television interviews on domestic violence and particularly homicides, in addition to writing letters to editors, op-eds, press releases and news advisories.

Ms. Brodie started her advocacy as a volunteer for the battered women's shelter in Manhattan, Kansas. It is here that she developed a passion for the movement. She moved to North Carolina in 1990 and began working at Interact, Wake County's rape and domestic violence crisis center. Marie worked as a crisis line counselor, youth educator, and community education director. As an advocate, she answered crisis calls, trained and supervised volunteers, accompanied rape survivors to the hospital, and facilitated support groups for battered women at mental health centers, the Raleigh Correctional Center for Women, and in the community. She created violence prevention curriculum and presented to middle and high school students in the Wake County public schools. Ms. Brodie provided training to law enforcement, social workers, teachers, and other allied professionals in the community.

Education:
Marie earned her Bachelor of Arts degree in psychology from the University of South Carolina at Aiken and earned her Master of Science degree in psychology from Kansas State University in Manhattan, Kansas.
